October 2, 2023, 9:30 am – 10:30 am

Press gaggle with Governor Hobbs immediately following the press conference. Small group tours of the facility upon request.

“We’re now able to collect plasma and platelet donations for the first time in the Phoenix-metro area,” said AZ NM Regional CEO Edgar R. Olivo. “More people in need of life-saving blood or platelets will be served in Arizona.”

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. About 29,000 units of red blood cells are needed in the U.S. every day. Blood can be safely donated every 56 days, up to six times a year.

Platelets play a critical role in the treatment of Americans fighting cancer, chronic diseases and traumatic injuries. Every 30 seconds, someone needs platelets. Platelets can be given every seven days, up to 24 times a year.

Type AB plasma can be given to patients of any blood type and is often used to help stop bleeding in emergency situations. Plasma can be donated as often as three times a week.

“Donors can schedule and manage their appointments, track their donations, earn rewards and recruit others to donate through our Blood Donor app,” said Olivo. “Download the free app by texting BLOODAPP to 90999 or searching ‘American Red Cross’ in app stores.”
